We’d had the first heavy snowfall of the winter. I grabbed my camera and dashed into London in my car, into Hyde Park, and saw this group on horseback. Wonderful! I took some great shots of them. I loved the overall feeling of a reddish-brown background to the scene, so when I came to paint it I covered the canvas with red and worked over that with blues, blacks and greys. Then I gradually added the brilliant touches of white on the branches. This just grew like Topsy and was one of the happiest paintings I’ve ever done.
